Alice.
Wasn't bad. Could have been better. If it had been longer, it would have been better.
I'm a fan of vast, complex, and super-developed worlds and characters so to have Lewis Caroll's character be kind of reduced to mere caricatures of their originals was disappointing. The whole idea of Wonderland as it may be 143 years after the events of the novel take place is a really intriguing concept and one that could have been played for so much more value than I felt it had been in this miniseries.
I think I expected something...well...creepier. There's this pervasive undertone of not-quite-right-ness in the original story that just didn't seem to exist in
Alice, the miniseries. Not to ignore the degradation of Wonderland, but that destruction was obvious whereas the slightly sinister tone of the original was more a ...suggestion... and other than a too short glimpse at some refugees and a slight look into the resistance, there wasn't enough exploration of Wonderland itself beyond what seemed to be forced attempts to create a parallel to 2007 successful Wizard of Oz reinvention,
Tin Man; two worlds commonly perceived to be places of wonder turned to ruin, their people subjugated at the hands of a wicked tyrant (in both cases women...hmmmmm...), two willful heroines destined to be the saviors of both lands.
I suppose I should be happy there are women with power here. And I guess I am, but I also wish
Alice had been...better.
Why wasn't the Mad Hatter mad? He seemed...normal. Isn't that strange? Shouldn't that have been slightly rethought? I mean, they couldn't have made him even slightly weirder than the average love interest? I would have even been happy with a sly riddle or two.
The cat was appropriately creepy. I wish the whole show had gone with that level of creepiness 'cause when that cat grinned, I wanted to run and hide and shudder. Evil.....but not. See? Creepy.
And Alice? Alice was fine. I suppose it helps that I found this actress infinitely more capable than Zooey Deschenel (DG in
Tin Man) who made watching that show nearly impossibly at times. I figure she was given a black belt in some unnamed martial art so as to quiet the whispers of displeasure sure to abound every time she needed to be saved by one of her compatriots 'cause it sure as hell wasn't for the potential for riveting fight sequences.
Aaaaaaaaand the ending. Happy as predicted. Wonderland saved. Alice back home. Alice gets Hatter.
If I must accept it, I suppose it's really not that hard a pill to swallow. It was an enjoyable show at the very least. I may even watch it again....the Hatter really wasn't bad. Kind of cute Which is never not a reason to watch something again.
...
I see you judging me. Cut that out.
